What Does It Really Mean To Be Greater?

If you have been a blog reader for a while, then you know that my personal word for last year was greater. As was the word for many others.
I defined “greater” in this post from another angle but while I was reading the book of Luke in December, something struck me and God opened my eyes and taught me somethings.
What does it really mean to be greater?

In Genesis 26:12&13, the bible says that – “Then Isaac sowed in that land, and received in the same year an hundredfold: and the Lord blessed him. And the man waxed great, and went forward, and grew until he became very great:”
The greatness here obviously meant wealth, which is of course is what many of us see greatness to be.
God does bless His people with greater wealth as seen in Isaac’s case but is that all there is to it?

Greatness.jpg
When you say our God is greater, what do you refer to? His riches? Houses? Or He Himself?
The awesome amazing Father? The beginning and the end?
Do you count Him great because of His money, kids and wife?
You count Him great because of who He is – God, amazing God in all ramifications.
God is a Spirit and deals in Spirit and in truth so how does He measure our greater first of all?
In the Spirit.

Luke 1:15 says of John the Baptist – ” For he will be great and distinguished in the sight of the Lord.”
Luke 1:32 says of Jesus – ” He will be great (eminent) and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give to Him the throne of His forefather David,”
The Bible says that these men were great in the sight of God. But were they great in riches like Isaac?
Nope.
John lived in the desert and Jesus… well Jesus moved from place to place, with no thought to even get great flocks of animals and all the wealth in those days(he was busy with ministry)
See these verses of Jesus and John the Baptist below…

Luke 1:80 – “And the little boy grew and became strong in spirit; and he was in the deserts (wilderness) until the day of his appearing to Israel [the commencement of his public ministry].”

Luke 2:52 – “And Jesus increased in wisdom (in broad and full understanding) and in stature and years, and in favor with God and man.”

Luke 4:14 – “Then Jesus went back full of and under the power of the [Holy] Spirit into Galilee, and the fame of Him spread through the whole region round about.”

Notice the recurring words in those verses?
Increased in the Spirit? Grew in the spirit? Strong in the spirit?

Both Jesus and John were great in God’s sight in the Spirit.
Greater in God’s sight not only entails wealth, it includes being greater in the Spirit.

Now, it was only till the end of the year 2014 that God opened my eyes to see this.
Jekalyn Carr’s song “greater” was also a theme song for last year and as God taught me this, I remembered that the song kept saying “there is a shaking in the SPIRIT preparing me for greater”…
God’s Spirit deals with our spirit first of all so the first greater He wants to see in us is to grow in the spirit and in what God has called us to do.
We need to ask ourselves some questions…
What was the state of your soul in 2014?
What was the state of your spirit man?
Were you greater in your soul?
We cannot only measure our greatness in line with the world’s.

Yes, I know that we need greater businesses and all and God knows this too, remember Isaac?
But we must understand that all the other physical manifestations of greatness can only follow if there is a spiritual greater.
Your physical greater cannot grow beyond your physical greater.
Greater businesses…

Greater relationships…
All that won’t be possible if there is no shaking in your spirit.
The spiritual greater prepares you for the physical.
God told me that all He truly just did in 2015 was shake me up in the Spirit to prepare me for other things.
He has to enlarge me spiritually first before He can place me into physical greater… enlarge me in the spirit… in the spirit.
What is God doing in your spirit? Are you giving Him room to do that?
Did you allow Him room to be make your spirit greater in 2014?
If you didn’t, it is not to late to start now.
As much as God tugs on our heart to talk to us and teach us, it is more of a personal decision to grow spiritually.
The word of God is key in spiritual growth.
We must love the word, we must study the word.
In Law School, I used to read the Bible for 1-2hours running, every time, even with books to read… There was an immense desire in me to get into the word and I tell you, my spiritual life was really different and amazing.
We cannot read God word without a love for His word so the first thing to do is to pray…
Lord give me a thirst and hunger for you.
Give me a thirst and hunger for your word.
Open my eyes to see the hidden secrets and pleasures that can be found in you and in your word.

Now, serving God isn’t supposed to be that hard with the Holy Spirit’s help. He can remind us and lead us into everything we need to do if we follow Him.
So ask the Holy Spirit for help.
He is our advocate, comforter, interceeder…remember?

Do not read this without a corresponding decision from you to be greater in the spirit.
Push all those great goals further down and put “a greater spirit man” on top of them all.
Every other physical greater follows the spiritual.
The level of our spiritual stamina will also determine the level of the physical manifestations we get.
But aside from that, grow spiritually greater because you love God and want to eat meat from Him and not just milk.

Prayer – Lord shake us spiritually.
Give us stability in the spirit.
Help us to grow spiritually.
Increase us in the knowledge of you in Jesus Name, amen.

The amazing thing about the word is that it entails all the information we need in life. Instructions on friendship, business, encouragement, love and the spirit. Even though, I miss on some days but most days, I read at least 4 chapters of the Bible.

I pray for the zeal to be thirsty for the spirit and to become greater in the knowledge of God.

I saw your comment Mobolaji and I’m praying “Lord give me(us) a hunger for your word, help us know that all we need is in your word and in you in Jesus name, amen”

And I’m inspired.that could be a challenge a day, atleast a chapter? 2chapters? 3chapters…at our own pace ofcourse.

      #more grace.

Greatness transcends just physical things, man is primarily a spirit who lives in a body and has a soul. We grow in our spirits when we spend time with Gods word, that’s why the flesh feels very uncomfortable when we are studying scripture and the mind drifts away because the soul finds it hard to comprehend spiritual things. But thank God for the Holy spirit that helps us in time of need. So when our flesh ‘feels’ weak the Holy Spirit in us would quicken our flesh.

Thank you Frances for this exhortation.More grace.

Thank you for this Tope..its impossible to understand the things of the Spirit without the Holy Spirit helping us.
All things are written by His inspiration anyways, we will get nowhere without Him.
Even the laziness of our flesh, He helps us overcome them.

    Well said, Frances.
we are first spiritual beings and our desire should be to increase spiritually. We are to seek first the kingdom of God and every other thing will be added.
This does not mean we should not desire wealth , Gods desire is that we own the wealth of the nations.

      Thank you Favoured woman…
Your comment brought this to mind – “delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart..”
Yes, He will give us the desires of our hearts but that can only follow after we give Him our hearts, wholly and put God first…
God help us all as we purpose in our hearts to grow in Him in Jesus Name, amen.
