Like many other writers/bloggers,I get inspiration from the wierdest of things and while watching “The Color Purple” this spoke to me profoundly. Please come along with me as I share…
“The Color Purple” tells the story of Miss Celie,an African American girl’s letter’s to God.
She was raped by her step-father and by the time she was 14,she already had two children for him.Her step-father gave the children up for adoption and also gave her away in marriage to Albert,a man with three children of his own.
The cycle of abuse continued.Sex was an affair she saw as him “doing his business”. He beat her at will and yelled at her at all times intimidating her into submission and near silence. She was practically a slave in her so-called marital home.
Needless to say,Miss Celie was a woman with virtually no self esteem. She even closed her mouth with her hands whenever she smiled because she had been told so many times before that she was ugly.
Shug Avery finally helped Miss Celie find herself and when she told Albert she was leaving him and was going to Memphis with Shug,He said;
Albert: You’ll be back.Shug got talent and she can sing. She got spunk. She can go anywhere and talk to anyone.
But what you got,huh?
You ugly, you skinny, you shaped funny, ain’t nobody foolish enough to
marry you. All you fit to do is be Shug’s maid!
Maybe take out her slop jar and maybe
cook her food, but you aint that good of a cook anyway.
And this house ain’t been clean good since my first wife died! What you gonna
do, hire yourself to farm?
Maybe someone’ll let you work
on their railroad.Maybe,SWEEP OUT THE
CABOOSE!
Who you think you is? You cant curse nobody. Look at you. Your black, you’re poor, you’re ugly, you’re a woman, you’re nothing at all!
Can you imagine being run down like that?
But here’s the light bulb moment!
The response that drew my attention.
The response that mattered more than all Albert’s insults.
Celie said: I may be poor, black, and I may even be ugly. But dear God, I’m here! I’m
here!
You may have been run down to the ground more times than you care to remember.
Your life may have been one where you are constantly told that you are worth nothing.
You may even believe that you are worth nothing.
You may even have been a victim of abuse like Miss Celie…
But YOU ARE STILL HERE!
There’s a reason for that.
Its not a mistake.
There’s more of you that the world still needs to see.
The World awaits to see ur light shine brighter.
The World awaits to see God mould you into that awesome person you can be.
Hold on.
Believe in yourself.
Be courageous.
You are still here.
There’s still hope.
Happy Weekend People!

October 5, 2013 at 7:46 pmBeautiful piece…the fact that we’re still here is proof that something better awaits us. for those that try to beat us down, put us down and keep us down, like the proverbial mule, all we have to do is shake off the dust and stand on it till we rise to the top.
