Online Bible Study Reader’s Request: How To Hear God’s Voice

I had this word ringing in my heart when I was at the conference I attended before I released my book.
And then recently, I was speaking to someone (*kiss kiss bebe, you know yourself), when she said something that reminded me of what I wanted to write about.
I answered her then asked for permission to share on the blog.

We were talking about something’s and I asked her to hear from God before she moves and she said:

My dear my challenge is I don’t hear God….I’ve not found the special way he speaks to me…

Now, that hit me because God speaks to us everyday. Every minute. Every hour. Every. Single. Day.
I love that she said I don’t hear Him because the fact that we don’t hear Him, doesn’t mean that He doesn’t speak.
I have had some pretty “strong” experiences with God on hearing Him speak and some “simple” experiences. All in all, I hope to use my experience by God’s grace to provide clarity on this to everyone who feels the same way our amazing sister up there does.

So let’s begin…

I first gave my life to Christ for real in 2011.
I had an experience with God where He pulled out of a terrible relationship (I talked about this in detail in my book) and that period of my life was one where I literally felt God hugging me.
After wards, some things started happening to me.
I would be walking in school (I was in Uni then) and would just be hearing this voice in my heart. It wasn’t in my head, it was just this little voice that spoke to me in my heart.
And then one day, there was this prompt to pray/preach in a bus I was seated in which I didn’t obey because I was a young believer then and was really ashamed/scared.
The years have passed by  and I have come to understand that God speaks to me in diverse ways. And what I have to do is to recognize these ways and set myself up to hear Him speak.
I was reading Joyce Meyer’s “how to hear from God” recently and I noted three ways by which God mostly speaks to me.
I would be sharing them here along with some tips on how we can hear Him, in hopes that everyone who struggles with hearing God speak to them can identify same(and more) in their lives and learn to watch out for them.

(1) God speaks to us by His Word.
Every blog reader here should know how the #OnlineBibleStudy we have here are birthed.
I simply have a Bible passage ringing in my heart, I get obedient, open up the passage and the Holy Spirit begins to teach me on it.
Every day I am mega grateful for God’s way of speaking by His Word.
There are days when the Word comes alive in awesome ways for me.
Days like before I published my book and was so scared of everything.
His Word to me was 2Timothy 1:7
I especially love days when I wake up with a Bible Passage in my heart, I almost feel like He taps me on those days and says “wake up my daughter, dig into my Word”.
And that’s what He is actually saying.
Do you have Bible passages ringing in your heart too? I say heart because it’s not really your brain thinking it.
How do I explain this?
Some times, it’s your conscience whispering it to you.
It’s the reason why we have to be still to be able to hear.
Even when I go through my day, I more than once take out time to just talk to God, say hi, thank Him, keep our connection alive.
That way, if He’s saying something, I don’t miss it because I am wrapped up with something else.

So the first way we can hear God speak is in His Word.
Remember that the Word is God. And the Word speaking to you is God speaking.
Now, I must add this. Sometimes, we ask for answers from God when the truth is that the answer is already in His word.
The more time we take out to study God’s Word, the more we will be filled with the knowledge of His will for every area of our lives.
God has spoken to me with Colossians 3 before as regards relationships.
So I can’t be asking God about a relationship that pulls me away from Him. He has already stated to me in His word that He was my relationship/marriage to be done in heaven’s way, not in the world’s way.
So as we seek God, let’s endeavor to know that the Word is a great place to start in hearing from God.
It’s not just God speaking to us from His Word, it also sharpens our spirit man to hear God more clearly.

(2) Confirmations.
Now Joyce Meyer says in her book I mentioned up there that we shouldn’t seek confirmation from others on what God has told us to do.
Sometimes God graciously does them and sometimes He doesn’t.
Ultimately, we should learn to trust God at His Word.
What I want to bring out here is the fact that I had had surreal experiences where someone else heard what I heard from God and at such times, I am reassured that this voice I hear in my head isn’t just me, it’s God.
Last year at Law School, I talked about my testimony on my externship, and that day in Church, God convicted me so much on not knowing the name of Jesus. I gave a testimony in Church the next sunday and mentioned it and my Pastor, Nathaniel Bassey said that was on his heart too, Infact, that was our sermon for that day that he had prepared.
Another experience struck me last month at the conference.
Remember that we had a study here on knowing Jesus but my own personal study didn’t end there.
I had a dream and just a “knowing” that God wanted me to draw close to Jesus. In fact, it was in the air. Every where I went to, it was all about Jesus.
So imagine the pastor saying in his session at the conference that for the last two weeks, it’s been Jesus more than ever.
When I heard him, I cried and repented because I didn’t really do what the Spirit was saying to me.
But that experience made me know something: the voices I hear in my heart aren’t crazy voices. What I sense in the spirit isn’t nothing, it’s God speaking.
And sometimes, God might just give you a confirmation on what he has told you, maybe in a devotion that day, from the lips of a friend that day, etc, etc.

(3) PEACE.
Now this one, I have heard crazy experiences with, so much so that no one can tell me that God doesn’t speak through peace in us.
Most times He uses this to speak to me in my relationships with people.
Probably because He knows with feelings involved, I need something stronger than the quiet voice of the Spirit.lol.
I have written about my experience with my friend Henry on lessons from when I almost dated an engaged man here.
Those were days when God had told me to leave him but the silly feelings were proving stubborn, so much so that God just took my peace away.
There were days I couldn’t pray.
The Spirit would shut me down. Obey me there first before you can call me your all.
This year again on another relationship I was praying about, I had no peace about it.
Something kept bugging me.
I didn’t know what it was but even after praying and thinking I got a yes, I still had this itch in my soul. Thinking if this was right or not. It wasn’t long before I knew that the itch in my soul wasn’t unfounded.
When God is speaking/ have given us go -ahead on something, we have peace about it.
We aren’t shaken.
Outer circumstances maybe rough but inside, we know what He has said to us so we are calm.
What to know if God is involved in what you are doing?
Check your peace.

(4) God speaks through Circumstances.
The first time I experienced this was when I gave my life to Christ.
I was a wreck.
A low self-esteemed wreck because of a boy.
I was asking God on one night if this is what He had for me when my “high boyfriend” exploded in another quarrel.
Normally I would run after him and beg him but that night I smiled and said thank you Lord for my answer.
And this has been a normal thing since then.
I remember praying for God’s will on wednesday and on sunday, a silly quarrel broke up between red lips and I.
Now, it’s not all circumstances that are orchestrated by God but how I know them is that I listen to the Spirit in me. Something just clicks within that says this is it.
I cannot explain it and won’t even try, what I would say is sharpen your spiritual antenna by spending time in God’s Word and spending time with Him.
As you do so, your spirit will recognize things your natural mind cannot explain.

(5) God speaks through promptings in our heart/the still small voice.
Now this one is so quiet, you have to be still to hear it. I don’t mean just still in body alone, still in your mind.
Sometimes after having your quiet time, take a moment to just be quiet and let God say whatever He wants to into your heart.
This was the way my conversation with God that I relayed to us on monday’s post went.
And it’s the way I mostly heard God aside from His word that comes alive in me.
It’s a voice that’s just in our hearts. Not every voice can be trusted though and we must know that everything the Spirit speaks to us aligns with the Word.
You can’t be hearing yes to a guy who doesn’t cut it with what the Word says.
You can’t be hearing yes to stealing.
You can’t be hearing yes to fornication.
So test every spirit with the Word, if you already have the Word in you then this becomes easier. You sift it with the Word before you accept it.

(7) God speaks with an audible voice.
Now this one I have never experienced.
Some who have experienced it says that it’s just as real as though a person is standing next to you.
It’s an authoritative voice that simply fills you up.
Again, even in this, test it with the Word to make sure that it aligns with God.

(8) God speaks through dreams and visions.
I don’t experience this much, but there are those who this is a regular in their lives.
There are dreams that stick on your spirit, not those that arises from eating over feeding oh.lol.
But there are dreams where really God says something to you, makes something clearer, or gives you an inkling so you pray and get more clarity.

Ok.

That’s about everything in my heart to share on this.

Now, I didn’t intend to write this much, I only had 3 ways in mind when I started writing.
Like I told our beautiful sister who asked me this question, God speaks to us in various ways.
I am sure that there are more than these, this isn’t limited or exhaustive at all.

She also asked me:
So should I be looking out for a voice or just believe his very word…the one that strikes me most.

Now, you don’t go out looking for a voice to speak to you, the Bible says that “There are, it may be, so many kinds of voices in the world, and none of them is without signification. – 1Corinthians 14:10″

So you go out looking for voices then any kind of voice can speak to you.
The first place to start hearing God speak is to get filled up with the Word.
The Word familiarizes you with how God speaks, with His character and ways, with His attitude and the way He thinks.
So you can easily spot out when it isn’t God speaking.
If you read my conversation with God on monday’s post, I wrote that you can perhaps distinguish my voice from God’s own.
My voice is filled with doubts and skepticism.
God’s voice is filled with possibilities and faith.
His voice is also gentle, calm, peaceful, patient with you.
Because that’s who He is.
God cannot tell you you can’t do what He has placed in you, His very Word says you can do all things through Him.
So knowing Him from His Word makes it easier for you to spot the difference.

Ultimately, don’t be so concerned about whether He will speak or not. He always speaks.
Get in the Word and start from there.
Then trust the Spirit in you.
I’m still learning to trust God’s Spirit in me because most times we get so skeptical about it but the truth is, we must have faith even in this.
Trust that God’s Spirit is in you, He always speaks and as you do your part to sharpen your spiritual man in His word, you will hear Him.
God won’t leave you adrift. He will surely direct your paths.
You read His word. Let His Word come alive in you and whatever instruction He has given you in His word, obey.

I recommend your getting Joyce Meyer’s “how to hear from God”
And Kenneth Hagin’s “How you can be led by the Spirit of God”.
My darling sister Princess also wrote on hearing God speak and you can read it here.

And I would love to hear from you, what ways does God speak to you?
What do you do to ensure that your spiritual antenna is tuned to hear Him speak?
Please comment below, let’s glean wisdom from the family of believers.

      Lizzy!
I’m glad that you could identify with lots of the ways in this post…its priceless to hear from our Daddy.

As for getting confused as to direction to take, I get that too, but like I said ultimately, we have to trust God that He will direct us.
I was reminded today of how I was worried for a decision to make in April, by may it was clear, God always shows up so far as we put Him first.

As for being agitated, yes, you may not hear Him cuz of that, relax, keep praying and He will speak.
Joyce Meyer says sometimes we are so wound up and miss His voice, just keep praying, maybe as you even go in your normal course of day, you will get your answer.

      Love and lots of love.

Thanks for this beautiful topic and insights. God indeed speaks to us all the time, it is we who don’t get to hear him all the time cos we sometimes have difficulty discerning His voice due to various reasons.

God has spoken to me through the various ways you listed above at different times, atimes using two or more means to send a particular message home. I can’t claim that I hear God all the times He speaks to me, I don’t.

God speaks to me most through His Peace, so no matter the storm or tough decision I have to make, once I have Peace about it coupled with the word of God, I know i’m good to go. On the other hand, no matter my good intentions, if I don’t have Peace about doing a particular thing, I don’t do it at that time until I have an inner approval from God.

Just like you said, the first place to begin is in the Word, test every voice, spirit, dream, vision, etc against the Word of God.

Currently I have a very important decision to make and i’ve been praying to God, telling Him my fears and doubts but God’s word to me each time is Pro. 3: 5-6. And the more I trust God and repeat the verses to Him, the more inner Peace I have and the path to tow is made clearer to me by the day.

I’m sorry I wrote a long comment…. God bless you always and keep you in Him. Do have a Fruitful midweek.

Hey Distinguished! I love the long comment..seriously, I am always excited to learn from everyone on wednesdays(and other days on the blog).

I caught the phrase “the path to tow is made clearer to me by the day”, sometimes that’s all it takes yes? Patience.
Praying and waiting on God to make what He wants us to do clear to us.
As we do so, our spirits get the 411 clearly as time goes on.
Patience is very necessary as we seek God’s will on what to do (I’m speaking to myself too as I am in the season of asking and asking about what’s up for some stuff)

God keep us in Him even as we endeavor to place His go-ahead first in all we do, in Jesus name, amen.

Hearing from God is one of His blessings to His Children. Many people go extra-extra miles to get to know such things as is served us on a platter of gold.

[NLT] Luke 10:21 At that same time Jesus was filled with the joy of the Holy Spirit, and he said, “O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, thank you for hiding these things from those who think themselves wise and clever, and for revealing them to the childlike. Yes, Father, it pleased you to do it this way.

I appreciate the grace of God in your life sister Frances, may God increase you therein daily in Jesus name… Amen.

I’ve experienced most of the ways you listed and the most powerful and authoritative way I’ve encountered is the audible voice. As rightly described by Distinguished, it’s very authoritative and it could hold you ransomed until you have fulfilled the command therein. It comes when a major turn-around is about to take place in the spirit realm. He may not give details. Until you do, your peace is withdrawn.

The place of Meditation upon His Word and Promises is a very powerful way to hear God. If you can study and let Him (the Holy Spirit) interpret to you, He will open you up into a whole new understanding of the Word. The Word will become flesh in you, like you are inside It and everything about you is made plain to you.

Also I will add how God has spoken to me through a movie (Christian Movie). There was a prevailing situation in my family at a time and I was praying restlessly and pointlessly…lol…until that faithful day I just tuned my tv randomly (as in auto search for any new channel), a station which we’ve never received a clear signal from came up and the movie was on. The scene I met was some Christians praying for a man who has been previously initiated and possessed by a demon through association; and a vision was given to the Pastor among the Christians praying for him: the Pastor saw himself trying to pour water into a clay pot that was covered and was complaining why the water is not entering and an old woman appeared to him and said “there’s no CURSE without a CAUSE”. That was all that Echoed into my spirit and with that key I made inquiry and details was shown to me, then I knew the right prayer to say.

As a child of God you cannot be confused when you have access to such Asset in/with you. Get intimate with the Holy Spirit. Get Him involved in all your endeavours no matter how important or meaningless it might be to you. He is interested!

God bless and keep us all in Him till we see and meet Him again revealed in the Glory of the Father.

NB: I’ve been blessed and renewed by your new book “Chastity for Men”…God bless you again!

Roland! Let me not lie, I have read your comment like thrice now.

Firstly, thank you for expatiating on the audible voice of the Spirit, I’d like to write that I would love to experience it but how God choses to speak to us is His to determine.

And yes, God speaks to us through movies too, songs that the words just won’t fade away from our hearts.

Your words on praying pointlessly again re-emphasizes the need to be sensitive in the spirit. As we do so, He filters in what to pray about in our heart(ofcourse I can’t explain how it happens), there’s just a sense of the direction to pray about in us.

God bless you bigly Roland! I am glad that we have amazing men of God in the house here.

And chastity for men? Oh yes, that’s our prayer, that lives will be renewed, glad that prayer has been answered in your life.
      Thank you for your comment.
      Thank you!

When I was much younger, I used to dream, not so much. But I used to have dreams. What I noticed was my dreams came to pass most times. I started telling my mum my dreams and she used to take it seriously. You know pray and all. I never knew it was a way God used to talk to me.

Now that I am older, I still have dreams once in a while. And I later realised my dreams were revelations when something I saw so clearly in the dream, that stayed in my heart for days even after dreaming happened. It happened and I knew I could have warded it off if only I took my dream seriously. Since then, I do not joke with my dreams because I know it is a very clear way God speaks to me. So yes, I can testify to the fact that God definitely speaks through dreams. Either to warn you about something so you can pray about it, or to give you a good news that might not happen now, but will definitely happen at some point. Because if God says it, nothing will stop it.

Then yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! The word is power. God speaks through his word. The way he speaks to me through that medium is priceless. Sometimes, I plan to spend 30 minutes reading the bible and I end up spending hours because of what God reveals through a verse. Just a single verse most times produces a blog post for me. It’s so priceless. Some scriptures that I have read and read before becomes new to me when the Holy Spirit takes over and I learn something entirely different. It’s really awesome. And the part that makes me smile so much is when the word I received in the morning is what the pastor is emphasising on later that day. There was a day I saw “that your faith will not rest in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God” like I had never seen it before. I ended up writing an article about it and honestly, while I was writing, I knew it was not me writing because when I finished and I read it, I questioned if that came from me (and that’s how Holy Spirit takes over most times when I’m writing). That same evening, I went for bible study and pastor Aduloju was just emphasising on that scripture. I juSt smiled and told the Holy Spirit thank you. Alot of times, I get a confirmation of what God spoke to me through his words from his servants.

I also noticed God speaks to me through people. That’s why it’s very important that we do not look down on anybody and we treat everyone with love. The truth is, God can speak to you through an unbeliever and especially through little children. And you will know it is God speaking because it will resonate with something that is already in your spirit man which you haven’t paid attention to. Through conversations with people, God has spoken to me. And yes, that still small voice is also very present. I call it the whisperings oF the Holy Spirit to my heart. It’s a guide that tells me what to do and what not to do. But I miss it when I am not sensitive in the spirit or when I do not trust the spirit.

One thing I do know is God always speaks. Even through the most unexpected channels. We just have to deepen our walk with him and it becomes easier to hear him. It will also become easier to discern his voice from that of another. It’s one of the things the Holy Spirit does. Seriously, life without the Holy Spirit is dead. Thank you so much Holy Spirit for always been there. I am eternally grateful.

Sorry about the long comment Frances. Stay beautiful hon!

      Mayowa!
      Sorry for the long comment?
      No thank you!

I wrote on my BBM status a few days back “that in this day and time I am ever grateful for the Holy Spirit. God did an amazing job with putting His spirit in us.
An absolute reassurance of the fact that His children can never go astray with Him in them.

I can sooo relate with dreams that stick with you and seem to be so real.
I do not get dreams like that but as I type now, there’s a dream from last year that I can relay the who and where and convos.

I also don’t take conversations for granted, sometimes it’s God strengthening our faith through another’s mouth, giving direction, confirmation, etc.

All in all, again, I re echo with you, I am grateful-mighty grateful for the Spirit of God in us!

Since the Spirit is one, I can boldly say that we have just shared the responsibility of expatiating on hearing from God. I will redirect my crew to ‘come and eat from this table’, as I couldn’t spell these points out any better.

    Thanks for the mention.

    Hi dear…
    This is really insightful…
Concerning hearing from God, it is a privilege we enjoy as Children of God. Any genuine child of God should be able to hear GOD speak.

But it doesn’t just come like that, u have to tune ur antenna to the frequency of the Spirit, by consciously spending quality time with God in the study of His Word, prayer, worship and anything that brings u closer to Him. That way, u’ll be able to get familiar with recognizing the voice of God.

It’s the same way it works in the physical… U can only differentiate the voice of someone from the lot, when u’ve spent enough time with the person.

    GOD help us all.
    Frances dear, I’m waiting oo

      Hey Ololade…
I spotted this from your comment, “we must consciously spend time with Him”, whether we feel like or not, feelings has nothing on it, we must strive to know Him better and decide to love Him with our time and enjoy His presence.
In doing so, we can always sift the voices and know when it’s our Lord speaking to us.
      #grace on us all.

And eh, when I publish your own question eh, I will be the happiest.
      Soon.
      Thanks for understanding babes 🙂

This great, this perfect and wonderful. I gather all the wonderful comments and hug them.

I have been listening to God and He has been speaking. One of them is spiritualist and mediums that one can consult. The spirit kept saying to me, you must not seek out any other form of medium or go looking for revelation and I though to myself, why. I have no need for that and you know that.
Anyway, my mum called my sister and I tonight and started advising us about church, She said ” I want you to start going to spiritual churches or white garment, your church isnt it because they don’t help you” she proceeded to say that I needed to start seeking out church or just go to places where they can tell me my future or if anything is going to happen to me so that I can solve it. Also once I start doing this, I should see a difference in a year.

I was speechless and said thank you.

Now I come over here and this message it like wow. The many ways God can speak to us.

    *****
Now, you don’t go out looking for a voice to speak to you, the Bible says that “There are, it may be, so many kinds of voices in the world, and none of them is without signification. – 1Corinthians 14:10″
So you go out looking for voices then any kind of voice can speak to you.
    ******

That bit of your post stood out for me because of the conversation I had tonight. But my conviction which I didn’t even voice out to my mum was this, My walk has given me so much grace not to seek just for me me me, but give and serve others, Therefore, I pray for my needs, love up the word and stay faithful.

    Can I reblog this?

yes, you can reblog this…there is no reblog button but hopefully you can copy and paste it or holla at me, i will send the document where i typed it to you.

I am overjoyed that this just served to re-emphasize what you already know..God will keep you in Him and make you a light to your family and more….

And yes, seeking to hear God speak is meant for more than us..it helps even those we are on our knees for..the voice of God alone we shall hear and a strangers voice we shall not follow…
      God help us all.

      love, love and plenty hugs!
